Empire Volleyball Academy(EVA) is a 501(c) (3)non-profit corporation formed by a group of dedicated volleyball enthusiasts, who saw the opportunity to create a different club experience in New York City, and in so doing raise the level of the sport throughout the Northeast.
How Are We Different ?
Our difference will be the addition of two of our philosophy-based components that is critical to the evolution of the Volleyball athlete, that is lacking in most of the existing clubs.
The first is what we call “knowledge driven coaching”. As coaches we are exposed to the sport specific habits that our athletes come to us with. There are far too many instances where, when asked, “what’s your reason for doing that?”, the answer is almost always “because the coach told me to do it”. While this will offer coaching instruction to the athlete, they will develop a “mechanical” style of playing.
The Knowledge based coaching is not designed to “coach” the sport. It is designed to school them in the sport. We achieve this by breaking down all skill based components so our athletes clearly understand how and why they do what is required of them. They will be given scenario based tasks in order to better prepare them to problem solve on their own when playing.
The second is fitness. It is a regular occurrence for teams to start out playing a match at a competitive level, only to have the team break down before the ending of the first set. This occurs often where the level of fitness is unsustainable, resulting in early court performance fatigue. Our Plyometric Agility and Core Training is designed to help the athletes sustain their level of play throughout the match. They will have these sessions at every practice separate from the time allocated for court work.
Achieving The Difference.
EVA focuses on the athlete as a whole and works on character traits that are essential in defining an athlete as they grow. This includes: discipline, time management, integrity, intensity, teamwork, leadership, and sportsmanship.
Our Coaching Staff
Our coaching staff runs the gamut of coaching experience. It includes national head coach, collegiate, junior club, high school, and middle school. All of our coaches have either club and/or collegiate playing experience.
We create a club environment where coaching is consistent from the first time a player enters the gym through high school graduation. EVA’s coaching process will be one that is uniformed, where coaching the fundamentals of the sport will be taught by using the same techniques throughout all levels of the club. Our coaches will undergo mandatory clinics for all head and assistant coaches. We encourage and facilitate the advancement of our coaching staff by sending them to USA run coaches’ courses to update themselves on the most current techniques and strategies used by top coaches in the game. The technical director will be responsible for leading many of the practices and mentoring new coaches.
Strength And Conditioning
Strength and conditioning are a core part of EVA’s program and it is designed to increase athletic performance on court and prevent injury. Our Plyometric Agility and Core Training program for our club teams will provide supplemental strength and conditioning training specific to the sport of Volleyball.
Our focal point is not just on volleyball; it is also the life lessons we teach through the sport.
