Lacrosse try outs are underway and programs on Long Island develop some of the best lacrosse players in the country.
If you’re new to “club lacrosse,” meaning travel lacrosse, here’s some key information about what you need to know before considering trying out:
- Club lacrosse begins in September and usually offer fall and winter weekly practices
- Some programs offer other benefits such as access to a sports psychologist or speed & conditioning (Liberty Lacrosse) to summer camps (Team Elevate)
- Lacrosse travel teams fees are approximately $2,000 and cover the year
- Travel games are played as far away as Philadelphia and Delaware and additional fees for tournaments may also apply
- It’s not unusual to practice at different locations
Lacrosse try outs – are they right for your child?
If your child has played a season with a rec league and has a passion for the game, then travel lacrosse may be a good option. The programs are usually structured so that other sports can continue to be be played in fall/winter. Unlike other sports (ahem, soccer), leaders in lacrosse recognize the benefits of playing other sports during the “off season.” In fact, many lacrosse players also play basketball since they are complementary sports. Come spring, the priority should be lacrosse however.
Below is a list of some of the more popular Long Island lacrosse teams, but if they’re not for you, click here to search for local programs nearby. Think a great program should have been listed? Send us an email and let us know: [email protected].

Any team that has over 90% return rate is doing something right. That’s why we believe the Outlaws when they say they stress learning the game and the fundamentals. They say they’re not focusing on being the “best of the best” and measure success by whether their players are better at the end of the summer. Sounds like they’re getting better in the right environment.
Spots are available on all teams as of 8/7.

Team Elevate (girls only)
Founder Dave K says he’s all about multi sports and recognizes that kids want to play different things and that priorities change week by week. That’s one of the reasons so many people flock to his program where girls learn how to play from both female and male coaches. Another awesome perk? If your kid’s a goalie, their tuition is free. Gotta love that!

You can’t have a lacrosse try out post without mentioning any program operated by Matt Panetta, one of Long Island’s best lacrosse players. As of now, Tomahawk try outs haven’t been announced, but once they are we’ll be sure to include it.
We’re not gonna lie — we don’t personally know anyone that’s been through the Yellow Jackets program, but their players do tend to be competitive and aggressive. What we love about it? Try outs are in the late fall, giving kids a chance to enjoy their summer without the pressure of trying out for a team that isn’t gong to start playing for many weeks.
They put together this handy chart below, so I just copied and pasted it…try out cost is $75.
